POP3 or IMAP4 - What's the difference? The basic difference is that with IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol, Version 4), the messages stay on the server at all times. This means users can access their mailboxes from multiple machines. No matter if you access e-mail from the office using Outlook Express or if you decide to check e-mail from home via a web browser, you are always viewing the same mailbox. With a POP3 (Post Office Protocol, Version 3) mailbox, messages are stored only temporarily on the mail server. This method of access is best suited to users who always read their mail from the same client system.
